One of my employees has resigned abruptly and is stating that i need to pay them for their vacation although they have resigned.

Vacation is one of those benefits that is earned over time. Up until the last day of work, vacation entitlement is calculated or prorated. So yes, if the employee has outstanding vacation or has earned vacation up until the resignation date, you will need to pay them for it.
